Choosing the Right Roofing Material: Metal vs. Shingles

When it’s time to replace your roof, one of the biggest questions homeowners face is which roofing material is right for your homemetal or shingles? Both have strong advantages, and the right choice often depends on your goals for appearance, longevity, and maintenance.

Architectural Shingles vs. Three-Tab Shingles

Not all shingles are the same.

  • Architectural shingles are thicker, heavier, and layered to create a dimensional look that mimics wood or slate. They typically last 25–30 years, resist wind and weather better, and come with longer warranties.

  • Three-tab shingles, on the other hand, are a more budget-friendly option but usually last 15–20 years and are thinner, making them more susceptible to wind damage.

For most homeowners, architectural shingles are worth the upgrade — they boost curb appeal, handle storms better, and add long-term value to your home.

Metal Roofing: Durability With Maintenance

Metal roofing is known for its strength and lifespan. When properly installed, a metal roof can last 40–50 years or more. It reflects heat, reduces energy costs, and performs well in both hot and cold climates.

However, metal roofs require periodic maintenance.
Over time, the screws and washers (which seal the panels) can wear down. It’s a good idea to have your roof inspected every 5 years to make sure the screws are tight and the washers haven’t deteriorated — this prevents water from seeping in and causing leaks.

Shingle Roofing: Reliable and Low-Maintenance

Shingle roofs are popular because they’re simple, cost-effective, and low-maintenance. Once installed correctly, you don’t have to worry about checking screws or fasteners. As long as the roof avoids hail or heavy foot traffic, shingles should last 20–25 years without much attention.

Shingle roofs are also quieter during rain and typically easier to repair. If one section gets damaged, it can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the roof.

Which Roof Is Right for You?

It really depends on what matters most to you:

  • Want a modern look and long lifespan? Go with metal.

  • Want a classic look and less maintenance? Shingles are the way to go.

  • Need the best balance between performance and cost? Architectural shingles are the sweet spot for most homeowners.
